What do you want the air conditioner in your house to do? That’s an easy question to answer—you want it to keep your house cool when it’s hot outside. But if your air conditioner drains a huge amount of energy doing that, much more than it should, it’s not doing its job the best way it can.
This is where efficiency comes in. An efficient air conditioner is one that maximizes how it converts electrical power into cooling power. You may have an AC that’s effective at giving you cooling but still be highly inefficient.
How Air Conditioning System Energy Efficiency Is Measured
The most important thing to know about air conditioner efficiency is how it’s measured. The efficiency rating of refrigerant-based air conditioners (i.e. standard ACs) is measured as SEER, Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is the ratio of the amount of heat the air conditioner removes from the indoor air, as measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units), to the amount of electricity used, as measured in watt-hours. SEER is determined over an entire season of use, rather than a single test, so it provides an average for a unit’s performance efficiency during summer. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the air conditioner.
What’s a good SEER rating for an AC? Currently, for an air conditioning system to receive the ENERGY STAR label from the Department of Energy, it must have a minimum of 15 SEER. Special high-efficiency air conditioners can have SEER of greater than 20.
Air conditioners have another efficiency rating, EER. This is identical to SEER except it’s determined over a single test at specific heat and humidity conditions. EER is always lower than SEER.
Higher SEER/EER Is Not a Guarantee of Energy Savings
Here’s the second most important fact to know about air conditioner efficiency: if you shop for a new cooling system based purely on high SEER/EER, you may still end up with a unit that doesn’t meet your needs and costs too much to run. Efficiency is important, but it’s not the only factor involved in shopping for a new air conditioner. If the wrong type or size of AC is installed in your house, it will waste money no matter how efficient it is. Because high-efficiency air conditioners cost more than mid-efficiency ones, you’ll need to balance out your short-term and long-term budget plans in order to find the right new system
